Getting braces is a big step toward achieving a healthier, straighter smile, but it also comes with some new responsibilities. Braces create more nooks and crannies where food and plaque can hide, making proper cleaning and care essential. The right tools can make your orthodontic journey much easier and more comfortable. Whether you’re new to braces or have had them for a while, here are some must-have tools to keep your teeth and braces clean, healthy, and on track.
Orthodontic Toothbrush
A good toothbrush is the foundation of any oral care routine, but when you have braces, a specialized orthodontic toothbrush is a game-changer. These brushes are designed with V-shaped bristles that fit around brackets and wires, helping you clean effectively without causing damage. Electric toothbrushes with orthodontic brush heads are also great options—they provide powerful yet gentle cleaning and can reach spots that manual brushing might miss.
Tip: Brush for at least two minutes after every meal, focusing on cleaning around each bracket and along the gumline.
Interdental Brushes and Floss Threaders
Flossing with braces can be tricky, but it’s still essential to prevent plaque buildup and gum disease. Floss threaders make it easier to guide floss under wires and between teeth. If traditional flossing feels too tedious, interdental brushes or orthodontic picks are excellent alternatives. These small, cone-shaped brushes fit perfectly between brackets and wires, removing food particles and debris with ease.
Tip: Use them gently to avoid bending wires or damaging brackets.
Water Flosser
A water flosser (also known as an oral irrigator) can be a lifesaver for anyone with braces. This device uses a steady stream of water to flush out food and bacteria from hard-to-reach areas. It’s especially helpful for cleaning around brackets and under wires where toothbrushes can’t always reach. Many orthodontists recommend water flossers as a supplement—not a replacement—for regular flossing.
Tip: Use your water flosser at least once a day, preferably before bed, for a deep clean.
Orthodontic Wax
Braces can sometimes cause irritation, especially when you first get them or after adjustments. Orthodontic wax provides instant relief by creating a smooth barrier between the brackets and the inside of your cheeks or lips. Simply apply a small piece to any bracket or wire that feels rough. This simple tool can prevent painful sores and make wearing braces much more comfortable.
Tip: Always dry the area before applying wax—it’ll stick better and last longer.
Travel-Sized Braces Kit
Since you’ll likely need to clean your teeth after meals and snacks, having a portable braces care kit is a must. Include a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, floss or interdental brushes, orthodontic wax, and a small mirror. Keeping this kit in your backpack, purse, or car ensures you can care for your braces no matter where you are.
Braces are a valuable investment in your oral health, and maintaining them properly helps ensure the best results. By using the right tools—like orthodontic toothbrushes, floss aids, and wax—you can keep your teeth clean, your mouth comfortable, and your smile shining throughout your orthodontic journey.
