How Invisalign® Works
When you decide to move forward with Invisalign treatment, you can expect to receive a new series of clear, plastic aligners every six to eight weeks that you’ll wear for two weeks at a time for 20 to 22 hours a day. Each set of aligners will gradually work to align your teeth until you reach your ideal results. Then, Dr. Neal will create a retainer for you to wear for a set amount of time to help maintain your hard-earned results.
Who Can Invisalign® Help?
Invisalign treatment in Henrico isn’t always the best option for every situation. In some cases, Dr. Neal may recommend another orthodontic appliance, like ceramic or traditional braces, instead. The best way to learn whether Invisalign is right for you is to schedule a consultation so Dr. Neal and our team can examine your mouth.
Crowded Teeth
Crowded, overlapping teeth can create additional crevices for plaque and food debris to hide out in and make it harder to effectively brush and floss your teeth. This can put you at a higher risk of cavities. Invisalign clear aligners can gently position your teeth to be side-by-side for a smile that looks great and is easier to keep healthy.
Gaps Between Teeth
Gapped and misspaced teeth can impact your confidence and cause you to want to hide your smile instead of letting it show. Invisalign treatment helps close these spaces in your arch to create a more symmetrical-looking, harmonious smile.
Bite Misalignment
Overbite, underbite, cross bite, and open bite can impact your jaw joints, chewing abilities, and even speech. Invisalign clear aligners, often with the assistance of elastics, can help correct malocclusion to ease the pressure on your jaw joints and prevent consequential issues like TMJ disorder from becoming worse.

How Much Does Invisalign® Cost?
Invisalign treatment in Henrico is custom-tailored to meet each of our individual patients’ needs, which is why we can’t provide you a cost estimate until we’ve had a chance to examine your mouth and plan your treatment. The cost will be determined by a number of factors, like how many aligners you’ll need and whether you’re diligent about wearing them for the required 20 to 22 hours a day. However, our team will make sure to discuss dental insurance coverage, financing options, and additional ways to save with you to make the process as affordable and stress-free as possible.
Invisalign FAQs
Does Invisalign Hurt?
Let’s start with one of the most popular questions: Does Invisalign hurt? Since there aren’t any metal components, the aligners are custom-made to fit the contours of your teeth, and there aren’t monthly adjustment appointments, the answer is “no.” In fact, outside of the slight soreness you experience from the movement of your teeth, your orthodontic treatment will be smooth sailing!
Tip: If your teeth feel a little sore, use a cold compress, sip on cool water, avoid crunchy foods, and take OTC pain medication as directed.
Can You Get Invisalign After Braces?
Oftentimes, yes! So, if you had braces in the past – whether it was decades ago or only a few years ago – don’t hesitate to schedule an Invisalign consultation with us. That way, we can get an in-depth understanding of your dental history, needs, and goals to determine if you’re a good candidate.
Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?
Do your upper teeth extend beyond your lower ones more than they should? If so, we have good news: Invisalign can fix mild to moderate overbites! During your consultation, we can assess the severity of your case, determine if you’re a good candidate for clear aligners, and, if you are, create your custom treatment plan. Yours may include additional orthodontic accessories, like rubber bands and buttons, but don’t worry – they are still considerably more discreet than metal brackets and wires.
Can I Drink Coffee with Invisalign?
Yes, but there are a few guidelines you need to follow, starting with always removing your aligners first. You also should use a straw to prevent the liquid from coming in contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth thoroughly with clean water afterward to prevent any residue from lingering on the surface. About 20 minutes later, brush your teeth, clean your trays, and put them back on (this will reduce your risk of dental decay and help you meet the 20-hour-a-day wear time minimum).
Will I Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign Treatment?
Yes, wearing a retainer after your Invisalign treatment is essential. After all, orthodontic relapse (the phenomenon when teeth begin to shift out of their ideal positions) happens to upwards of 50% of patients. To prevent that from happening, our cosmetic dentist in Henrico will provide you with a custom retainer and give you specific instructions on when to wear it.
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
There are several factors that will impact how short or long your Invisalign treatment is, including the severity of your case and how often you wear your aligners. With that said, there is an average timeline: 12-18 months. This is considerably shorter than traditional braces, which often take 2+ years. So, if you want a straighter smile by this time next year, you should definitely consider Invisalign!
