Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustments

After your thorough consultation, we will determine if the cause of your jaw pain is due to incorrect bite alignment. If so, we may be able to improve your symptoms with the help of equilibration/occlusal adjustments. Correcting your bite alignment by reshaping certain teeth should allow you to bite down normally and see that your teeth touch without causing more stress on your jaw and smile.

Occlusal Splint Therapy

In many situations, occlusal splint therapy can help create a barrier between your upper and lower arches. This prevents teeth clenching and grinding as well as reduces the chances that you will tighten your facial muscles, helping to keep them relaxed throughout the day. It is also possible that depending on the severity of your case, you may be required to wear a nightguard, which helps to protect your teeth from touching during the night, or a mouthguard that works during the daytime.

TENS Machine Treatment

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. This small, handheld system uses electrode pads that gently attach to your skin. When the system is on, it will send an electrical pulse to the pads, which will stimulate muscle contractions and essentially cause your muscles to massage themselves. By stimulating and massaging your facial and jaw muscles, your jaw can be relaxed enough to begin additional, long-term treatment.

TENS muscle therapy is a completely safe and highly effective treatment. Although it transmits electric pulses, it only penetrates the skin down to the nerve fibers, and most treatments are performed at a low frequency. Most patients can begin to feel relief after a 30-minute session of muscle therapy; others, however, don’t find relief until after 30 to 60 minutes. No matter the severity of your pain or TMJ, our dentist can provide gentle, effective, and stimulating treatment to help relax your facial muscles and alleviate your pain.

Corrective Orthodontic Therapy

If your TMJ treatment requires more extensive procedures, our dentist at Who Does Your Teeth can provide and recommend other doctors to perform orthodontic corrective therapy in Henrico, VA!

Most people think of orthodontics as treating your teeth to create a straight, aligned smile. However, orthodontics is concerned with more than just your teeth. Part of orthodontics deals with your jaw’s alignment, as well as the connected ligaments and muscles. If you suffer from TMJ, it may be caused by more than just bruxism (teeth clenching or grinding), injury, or arthritis. Oftentimes, TMJ is due to the temporomandibular joint and muscles being stressed and overworked. This happens when your bite is not properly aligned.

In most cases, people think of an aligned smile as one in which the teeth in both the upper and lower arches are lined up and simply look good. However, even if your smile looks aligned, it may not be. Having your bite properly aligned means that your upper and lower teeth fit together in a comfortable way when you close your bite. If your bite is not aligned—even if it may look good—your muscles and jaw joints can overwork and overcompensate to get your teeth in the right position, thus causing your TMJ.
