Although bruxism most commonly occurs while you are sleeping, it can also occur during the day. Some patients clench or grind their teeth on purpose or subconsciously, especially during frustrating or stressful situations. At our practice, we want to help keep your mouth in good condition at all times. Our dentist will evaluate your condition to determine the severity of your bruxism and whether or not you could benefit from a daily appliance.

There are several oral appliances that can be used to treat bruxism, with night guards being the most common. However, our dentist may also recommend a mouth guard. Functioning the same as a night guard, a mouth guard provides customized protection throughout the day. Our dentist will create an impression of your teeth that will be used to create the mouth guard, thus providing you with maximum comfort and protection.

Another common appliance is the occlusal splint. These appliances are also custom made to fit comfortably and securely in your mouth. Occlusal splints are typically smaller than mouth or night guards, fitting only between your back teeth. Their purpose is allow your upper and lower teeth to come together without actually making contact. This prevents patients from grinding their teeth, and although you can still clench your jaw, there is a soft and supportive appliance protecting your teeth and absorbing some of the pressure that would otherwise be on your jaw joints and muscles.
